Man Caught After Fleeing Police At 110 MPH
MILNGTON, Ill. (CBS) -- Police say a man went from driving 23 mph over the limit, then to a drastic 110 mph in an attempt to evade police in the Kendall County town of Milington.
On Sunday, a Kendall County Sheriff's Deputy attempted to pull over a vehicle for speeding at a rate of 78 mph in a 55 mph zone, a release from the sheriff's office said.
Instead of stopping, the man driving the vehicle sped off and reached a speed of 110 mph as he passed several vehicles, the release said.
Later, the man was able to hide his vehicle behind a six-foot wooden fence and placed a sheet of plywood in front of it to make the vehicle less visible to police, according to the release.
But residents in the area of the 200 block of Grant Street in Milington helped direct deputies to a house, where they found the man was hiding in the attic of a detached garage, the release said.
The suspect, Jonnie Robert Lee Watts, 21, of the 3900 block of East 2603rd Road in Sheridan, Ill., was arrested around 6 p.m. Sunday. He was charged with aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer and issued citations for speeding, and speeding more than 40 mph over the statutory speed limit, passing in a no passing zone and disobeying a stop sign, the release said.
Milington is about 60 miles southwest of Chicago.
