Man Brags Of His Attempted 160 Mph Car Getaway
JASPER COUNTY, Ind. -- It is unknown how fast he was going when he crashed, but a northern Indiana man allegedly bragged to an officer that his 2002 Chevrolet Camaro, with 600 horsepower, reached 160 mph as he fled from police.
Joshua Curtis, 25, of Wheatfield, Ind., ran because he thought he could get away, he allegedly told police.
Neither he nor his passenger, wife Mallory Curtis, 24, was injured when the red Camaro crashed into a utility pole at the intersection of Jasper County roads 1700N and 700W.
The chase started at about 12:20 a.m. Sunday in Porter County, when an officer parked in a driveway in the 1100 south block of County Road 625W clocked the car at 53 mph in a 35 mph zone. As soon as he activated his lights to stop the car, the officer heard the Camaro's engine downshift and rapidly begin to accelerate.
Curtis continued to pull away even though the police car was going more than 100 mph. The Camaro crashed at the intersection where there is a slight jog in the road, according to the police report.
The Curtises did not get out of the vehicle when asked, so the officer kept his gun on them until backup arrived. Joshua Curtis was arrested for resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, a felony, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He also was ticketed for speeding; driving with a suspended license, with five separate indefinite reinstatement dates; and false license plates. A handmade sticker changed the expiration date on the plate from 2009 to 2012, police said.
