Man Detained After Walking Into Traffic On Dan Ryan Expressway

CHICAGO (CBS) -- After darting in and out of traffic on the Dan Ryan Expressway during the morning rush, a man took a rather strange approach in his effort to get away from Illinois State Police and IDOT Minutemen: he dropped his pants and tried to run away.

It started around 6:10 a.m., when the man was spotted walking along the shoulder of the inbound express lanes of the Dan Ryan.

The man repeatedly crossed the Dan Ryan, waving his arms at passing cars, as Illinois Department of Transportation workers and state troopers tried to reach him without blocking traffic.

In his attempt to avoid authorities, he hid underneath the 63rd Street station on the CTA Red Line, and at one point crossed over to the outbound lanes of the expressway.

Around 6:25 a.m., as the man was walking south on the shoulder of the outbound express lanes, three IDOT Minutemen tow trucks began blocking traffic in the local lanes as a state police squad car approached him in the express lanes.

The man slid his pants down around his ankles, and hopped over the concrete barrier between the express lanes and local lanes as the tow trucks and squad car got closer, and then started running.

After trying repeatedly to jump back over into the express lanes, a state trooper finally ran up to him as he fell to the pavement.

The trooper and three IDOT workers managed to detain him near 63rd Street. Illinois State Police said the man was taken to St. Bernard Hospital for evaluation.
