Dog Will Lose Leg After Being Shot; Owner Fatally Wounded
(CBS) – A 48-year-old Gary, Ind. man was fatally shot and his dog injured when the two were hit by gunfire Friday morning.
Gary police say Keith A. Dumas was walking his dog in the 400 block of Adams Street around 10 a.m. when gunfire erupted. Dumas sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The dog was shot in the leg and was rushed by a police officer to Westchester Animal Clinic in Chesterton, Ind. Veterinarian Larry Reed tells CBS 2's Brad Edwards the dog must have his leg amputated, but should make a full recovery. Reed says the dog -- Dumas' family members say he is named C.J. -- is a friendly animal and not aggressive.
"Innocent victim; shouldn't have been shot," Reed says.
Police heard shots and responded to the scene, but they had no information about potential suspects or what happened before the shooting.
Dumas, the shooting victim who died, is the father of two teen girls.
