CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 72-year-old man was in critical condition late Monday after an early-morning apartment fire in the West Side's Homan Square neighborhood.

Neighbors shot video showing Chicago firefighters climbing a ladder to the top floor of a three-flat in the 3300 block of West Polk Street, near Spaulding Avenue.

The man was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County from the scene, police said.

The fire was contained to the top floor, and no one else was hurt.
