Suspicious Package Closed Kennedy, Blue Line Station
UPDATED 11:28 p.m.
CHICAGO (STMW) - Portions of the Kennedy Expressway and multiple Blue Line CTA train stops were closed for at least two hours Monday night when a suspicious package was discovered at the Blue Line's Addison stop on the Northwest Side.
The briefcase, which was discovered at the CTA platform at 6 p.m., did not contain explosive materials, Grand Central Area Deputy Chief of Patrol John Escalante said.
Wires were seen sticking out of the small suitcase, according to dispatch reports.
Dispatch reports also indicated police investigated a nearby parked car in the vicinity of the 3600 block of West Addison Street. Escalante did not mention the vehicle.
As a precaution, Illinois State Police closed the Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94) in both directions until 8 p.m. The Addison ramps remained closed late Monday while the police Bomb & Arson unit continued their investigation.
CTA spokeswoman Wanda Taylor said initially trains were not stopping at stations beyond Belmont. Later Monday, Blue Line trains were operating but not stopping at the Addison station, Taylor said. Instead, shuttle bus were taking passengers around the affected area.
The Blue Line Addison stop runs along the Kennedy.
