Major Bridge In Hammond, East Chicago To Be Demolished, Rebuilt
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Demolition of a bridge that connects Hammond and East Chicago in northwest Indiana is scheduled to begin next week.
State officials say a new bridge on Indianapolis Boulevard is expected to be in place by the end of the year.
The bridge originally was scheduled to be replaced in 2009 but was delayed by work on a nearby rail yard.
The bridge is one of the most heavily traveled in Northwest Indiana and connects Hammond to East Chicago and the big South Shore commuter train station.
