Magazine Names St. Charles Best Town For Families
ST. CHARLES, Ill. (CBS) -- West suburban St. Charles has won the honor of the best U.S. town for families, courtesy of Family Circle Magazine.
The magazine bases its rankings on the amount of affordable housing, green spaces, the quality of the public schools, and what it calls a "giving spirit."
Family Circle deems education in St. Charles "first rate," pointing out that St. Charles North High became the third school in the district last year to win a U.S. Department of Education National Blue Ribbon Award.
The community spirit in St. Charles is also lauded by the magazine.
Monica Corbett left Chicago for St. Charles with her husband, Mike, and four children, after falling in love with the town on a weekend golfing trip, the magazine says. Corbett tells the magazine he remembers one occasion when a police officer gave out free coupons for ice cream for kids who wear bicycle helmets. Also, Corbett tells the magazine, a neighbor offered to lend the family his car while he was away for the winter.
She calls the town "a little slice of heaven."
Also, the magazine cites "good deeds" in St. Charles, in particular the high school drill teams that raise funds for the American Cancer Society in the fall every year, and took in $7,400 last year.
