Madigan: ComEd Customers May Get $100M
CHICAGO (AP) – Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says her office has won a court appeal that could reduce future Commonwealth Edison customer utility bills by more than $100 million.
Madigan said the Second District Appellate Court ruled Friday that the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) improperly allowed ComEd to recover inflated property costs and extra infrastructure charges.
The ruling stems from ComEd's 2008 request for a $360 million rate increase. Madigan opposed the request, but the ICC eventually granted ComEd a $275 million increase, which the Attorney General's office then appealed.
ComEd spokesman Bennie Currie said Friday night the utility is disappointed in the decision, feeling it puts ComEd and the Illinois region at a distinct disadvantage to other states in terms of efforts to build a 21st century electric grid.
