Loop Art Exhibit Celebrates Power Of Women
CHICAGO (CBS) -- An art exhibit in the Loop is focusing on the power and strength of women.
CBS 2 Writer Edie Kasten got a look at the new exhibit, "The Power of Women," which is now on display at the First Methodist Church at the Chicago Temple, 77 W. Washington St.
Curator Patricia Devine-Reed says there are seven women exhibiting, of whom she herself is one. Also exhibiting are Cousandra Armstrong, Darlene Bennett, Tamara Love, Roby Nyther, Sheryl Toles, and Zoraida Valdes.
"Each one interprets women as creators; as nurturers; as protectors of the environment," Devine-Reed said.
Love is displaying sculptures of representing women in the Bible. Bennett's elaborate quilts, in her words, show "power through design and color."
Armstrong says her photographic presentations show "the power in color, the focus, and the light."
Toles, a painter and mixed media artist, says her work shows power "through color and relationship," while Nyther says her photographs show power "through love, light and imagination."
As for Devine-Reed, her work at the exhibit includes a portrait of Jean Carter-Hill, the director of "Imagine Englewood If," a group dedicated to improving the lives of residents in the South Side's struggling Englewood neighborhood.
Devine-Reed says Carter-Hill "is committed to the community, and totally committed to helping young people make something of themselves."
"The sky is open. The world is open. There is a lot that needs to be done," Devine-Reed said. "All of this, I think, is part of our legacy."
