Local School Council Elections Begin; Few Candidates At Many Schools
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Local School Council elections begin Wednesday, and many schools are suffering from a lack of interested candidates.
As WBBM Newsradio's David Roe reports, earlier this year, the Chicago Public Schools agreed to push the sign-up deadline from March 8 to the March 23.
Still, the Chicago Tribune reports, some schools had barely enough applicants to fill the slots, even with the extension.
CPS made strides to recruit people, with parent letters, social media, and even an App called, "Who is Running for my Local School Council?" with minimal results, the Tribune reports.
The newspaper reports district officials say part of the problem is a money shortage. In previous years, the city's advertising budget included up to $25,000 paid to community groups, which generated better results.
