Local Red Cross Sending Aid To Storm-Ravaged South

CHICAGO (WBBM) – The American Red Cross of Greater Chicago has been called to North Carolina to help victims of the deadly tornadoes.

The storm system that brought tornadoes from Oklahoma to North Carolina in recent days turned out to be the deadliest in more than three years. The Chicago agency has sent laptops and cellular phones to help with communications and also a disaster-relief worker.
"He's specially trained to help people deal with emotional consequences of large disasters like this," spokesperson Martha Carlos says.
Carlos anticipates more aid workers from Chicago will follow. Volunteers will likely stay there for up to three weeks.
At least 44 people have died, almost half of them in North Carolina.
Some 60 tornadoes were spotted in North Carolina and neighboring states in recent days.
The storms claimed 24 lives in North Carolina alone, and wiped out many homes in rural Bertie County, CBS News reported.
