Local Girl, 6, Drowns In Gary, Ind.
GARY, Ind. (STMW) -- A 6-year-old girl from the Chicago area drowned Saturday at Lake Street Beach in Gary, according to Gary police.
Marche Wilburn, 6, was found in the water by Gary Fire Department personnel, Gary police said. Wilburn was taken to Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus in Gary where she was pronounced dead, according to Simon Lillie, a public relations officer for the Gary Police Department.
Gary police listed the time of death as 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
The girl's mother had discovered that her child was missing at the beach along Lake Michigan and then notified a lifeguard, police said.
Gary police said medics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Wilburn after she was pulled from the lake. She was then taken to the hospital.
A Gary police report on the incident stated that Wilburn had been missing 10 to 15 minutes before Gary police and fire personnel were notified.
Gary police reported the girl was from Chicago; the Lake County Coroner's Office said she lived in Robbins, Ill.
