Loaded Gun Found On Wheaton School Property

WHEATON (CBS) -- A loaded gun was found on the grounds of a Wheaton elementary school on Wednesday morning shortly before classes were to begin for the day.

Around 8:30 a.m. a citizen spotted a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol on a dirt walking trail about 75 yards from Madison Elementary School, 1620 Mayo Ave, according to a news release from the Wheaton Police Department. The gun was loaded and lying next to a dog leash on the south side of the school property.

Police were called and immediately made the weapon safe, according to the release.

Officers and detectives checked the interior and exterior of the school building and found no additional weapons. Students began arriving for the school day and officers remained on campus.

There are no recent reports of crimes in the community that involved firearms.
