Listen: Craig Miller With Mike Joyce
By Craig Miller-
(CBS) Lamar Fenner was a Golden Glove Boxing Champion from Leo High School and was from the South Side of Chicago. He was a highly-touted boxing prospect until he suddenly passed away from an enlarged heart last December.
Not only was Lamar a Golden Glove Champion, he went on to beat Tamerlan Tsarnaev in his first fight at the National Golden Gloves in Salt Lake City in 2009. This week, we found out Tamerlan Tsarnaev was one of the two suspects that was involved in the Boston Marathon bombings. The 26-year-old Tsarnaev, who had been known to the FBI as Suspect No. 1, was killed overnight.
Early this morning, I spoke with Mike Joyce, the head trainer to Fenner. He told me that he was unaware that Lamar had fought Tsarnaev in 2009. Joyce was able to research Fenner's boxing history and confirmed that he did defeat Tsarnaev in Salt Lake City.
Listen to Mike talk about the fight and what he knew about Tamerlan Tsarnaev.
