Lions' Calvin Johnson Retires From NFL
(CBS) Lions star receiver Calvin Johnson has officially retired from the NFL at the age of 30.
Johnson, who played nine seasons, all with the Lions, recorded 731 catches for 11,619 yards and 83 touchdowns during his career.
"After much prayer, thought and discussion with loved ones, I have made the difficult decision to retire from the Lions and pro football," Johnson said in a statement. "I have played my last game of football."
During his standout career, Johnson often had big games against the Bears. The possibility of his retirement came as no surprise, as it had been a story building for weeks. Two weeks ago, Bears coach John Fox was asked about the scenario.
"If you just looked at our games (against Johnson), I'd say 'Yay,'" Fox said.
Johnson issued a lengthy statement through the Lions, opting to leave without a press conference. On Monday, Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning retired at age 38, following an 18-year career that included two Super Bowl victories.
In closing, Johnson said: "From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all for everything."
