Lindenhurst Man Had Bombs In His Home: Lake County Prosecutors
(CBS) – A 28-year-old north suburban man was arrested this weekend, accused of making bombs in his parents' home in Lindenhurst.
Michael Suopys, of the 800 block of Jefferson Drive of Lindenhurst, was charged with a Class 3 felony and is being held at the Lake County Jail on $1 million bond, according to the Lake County State's Attorney's office.
Thanks to a tip, police found out Suopys was making purchases online to build a weapon. They began an investigation, obtained a search warrant for his parents' home, and after searching the home Friday, found two pipe bombs, two pipes containing a material similar to the highly flammable Nitrocellulose, an empty steel pipe, a PVC pipe containing a motor, and laboratory equipment in Suopy's bedroom.
Neighbors said they never noticed any suspicious activity from Suopys.
"The whole time, we kind of felt sorry for the people who live there, because it's a very, very close community," Brad Waggoner said. "We've known the son, and they're nice people. Yeah, you just have to say that. They always have been nice to us."
It was not immediately clear what Suopys was planning to do with the bombs.
"We will never know for certain what potential tragedy was averted, but the evidence that has been recovered certainly indicates that this individual was planning something sinister. While the facts of this case are certainly disturbing, this is an excellent example of how effective law enforcement can be when we communicate and work together," Lake County State's Attorney Mike Nerheim said.
Suopys was due back in court on June 16.
