Man Who Shot, Killed Himself After SWAT Standoff At Lincoln Avenue Motel Was Wanted In Kenosha Murder
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a standoff with police at a Lincoln Avenue motel was wanted in the murder of a woman in Kenosha, Wisconsin, CBS 2 News has learned.
As CBS 2's Jermont Terry reported, family reported the Kenosha woman was originally from the Libertyville area, and moved to Wisconsin several years ago. On Wednesday, the man wanted in her murder left an entire Chicago community uneasy.
At 1:10 p.m., Chicago Police said the 52-year-old man barricaded himself inside a room at the Rodeway Inn at Lincoln and Jersey avenues.
There were tense moments as U.S. Marshals carried guns and Chicago Police surrounded the motel. For hours, those in the North Side community were told to stay inside as police tried to get the man to surrender.
Police said the man barricaded himself in a room, and was wanted and running from Wisconsin for murder.
Right across the state line in Kenosha, investigators found Janine Sznitko murdered inside her home.
"I'm devastated, heartbroken," said a woman who knew Sznitko. "I'm going to miss her so much."
Family said they last talked to Sznitko last Thursday.
Police told CBS 58 Milwaukee they were called to check Snitzko's welfare on Tuesday after she did not report to work after Labor Day weekend. She was found dead around noon Tuesday at a home near 75th Street and 29th Avenue, CBS 58 reported.
It is not clear how she died.
Neighbors told the Milwaukee station that Sznitko was an accountant who loved to play video games on her PS4 and loved her dog and cat.
"She was an extremely nice person and she was always walking with her dog," neighbor Trent Taft told CBS 58. "She was always alone and she was just really lighthearted."
Sznitko's sister said over the phone that Sznitko met the man suspecting of killing her at a bar, and soon feared for her safety – even telling family that if something happened to her, they should look for the man police found in Chicago – identified by Kenosha police as Roberto Andino.
Andino appeared in a community alert issued by Kenosha police on Tuesday.
Investigators never got to talk to Andino at the motel. When the SWAT team got into the motel room using a key, he was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot, police said.
Kenosha police confirmed in a tweet late Wednesday that they were no longer looking for Andino and he was the subject of a death investigation in Chicago.
No one else was shot or injured during the three-hour standoff.
