Levine: DL Trip Could Await For Gordon Beckham

By Bruce Levine-

(CBS) It appears White Sox second baseman Gordan Beckham will come up short in his rehab attempt to make the Opening Day roster as he recovers from a strained a oblique on March 14. Beckham hasn't played since.

It would seem that a short stint on the disabled list would help Beckham get over the hump and miss a few cold-weather starts. The team can retroactively bring back the second baseman at any time.

Beckham took a healthy round of batting practice with the team's starters Tuesday, but he still seemed a bit hesitant to pull any balls to left field.

"He as a chance," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said Tuesday. "I would not say he was 100 percent (in BP) the way he was swinging out there."

Ventura must make a decision soon on his lineup for Monday's opener.

"It is pretty soon," he said in reference to deciding on Beckham. "You get to the point where you don 't want to rush him back. You know it will be cold, and he has not had a lot of live (action). You can't pinpoint it now but (the decision) is close."

Marcus Semien has had an excellent spring and will get the nod at second base if Beckham starts the season on the DL.
