Let The Melting Begin: Temps To Hit 60 By Thursday?

CHICAGO (CBS) - The more than 20 inches of snow that fell on Chicago by early February are melting rapidly -- as temperatures have climbed into the 40s and keep rising.

CBS 2 Meteorologist Megan Glaros says the high for Monday is 42 degrees, rising to 44 Tuesday. In the middle of the week, a high-pressure ridge will blow in, pushing temperatures up to 51 Wednesday, and 56 Thursday.

Glaros says the high Thursday afternoon could even reach 60 degrees.

Last week, temperatures slipped into the subzero range, ensuring that the more than 21 inches of snow that fell in the blizzard the week before would not melt. Even on major streets, some crosswalks remained unshoveled, forcing pedestrians to follow others' footprints as they walked.

But now, while some may complain about the cigarette butts and dog poop being revealed by the melting snow, the smell of spring is in the air at last.

The only threat of inclement weather this week is rain. The sky is expected to be clear through Tuesday, but rain is possible Wednesday through Friday, the weather service said.
