'Suspicious' Package Prompts Response To UIC Medical Center
CHICAGO (STMW) - A suspicious package prompted a police response to the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago campus on the Near West Side Wednesday night.
Just before 7 p.m., a service worker on the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago campus saw a package outside by a newspaper box near 909 S. Wolcott Ave. and reported it to UIC police, university spokesman Bill Burton said.
The building, known as the College of Medicine West Tower, was evacuated as a precaution and police Bomb and Arson officials are investigating Wednesday night, Burton said.
The building is an older structure used mainly for college offices, and no patients are treated there, Burton said.
UIC police are urging people to avoid the area, according to an alert on the university's website.
Police and fire crews remain at the scene Wednesday evening, but a Chicago Police spokeswoman had no immediate information about the incident.
