Lawndale Fire Kills One Man
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man died overnight from a fire in Chicago's Lawndale neighborhood, in an apartment building.
The Chicago Fire Department said they found the 64-year-old man's body in the basement unit of the building in the 1600 block of South Homan Avenue, after the fire was put out around 1:30 a.m.
Four other people were able to get out in time and were not hurt. CFD said the fire appears to have been an accident.
Following the blaze, firefighters turned out on the block Saturday morning to pass out smoke detectors to neighbors – batteries included. The firefighters went door-to-door.
They talked about why smoke detectors are important and how to use them.
The Fire Department has not said whether there were any working smoke detectors in the building that burned earlier Saturday morning.
