Lawmakers: Loss Of Federal Highway Funds Could Cost Illinois 65,000 Jobs
WASHINGTON (CBS) -- A bipartisan push is underway from key lawmakers, who want to extend a federal highway bill and save jobs in Illinois.
As CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports, U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.) say Illinois could lose more than 65,000 if the federal program is allowed to expire.
Federal funds provide 62 percent of the construction money for the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The current highway program runs out on Sept. 30. Lawmakers are asking that it be extended and acted upon by the end of the month.
