Lawmaker: State Has 3,000 Cars That Are Barely Used
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (CBS) -- A state lawmaker says Illinois is wasting a lot of money on cars that aren't needed.
As WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports, the state has about 12,000 vehicles that are paid for by taxpayers.

According to an audit conducted last year, about 25 percent, or 3,000 vehicles – based on sampling – do not meet a state requirement for their use to be justified.
State policy says if a vehicle is not driven at least 7,000 miles a year, the state shouldn't own it, the Daily Herald explained.
State Rep. Michelle Mussman (D-Schaumburg) tells the newspaper the cars that aren't meeting the policy should be sold.
As it is, there are more than 1,000 state-owned vehicles on the road this year compared with last year, the Daily Herald reported. The state sold 1,875 vehicles through auction last year, and 1,198 were purchased, the newspaper reported.
