Latest Ventra Issue: Tap Wallet On Reader, Get Fees Deducted From Wrong Card
(CBS) -- A serious warning from Chicago's largest bank to its customers who use Ventra cards.
The "wave" symbol on the front of a Ventra card represents a contactless chip that allows money to be deducted to pay for the ride.
The same symbol is on some credit cards, like the Chase debit card
Josh Saunders has in his wallet.
Ventra Readers Picking Up Other Cards
He tapped the wallet over the Ventra reader and later discovered a $2.25 hit on his Chase debit card.
"I was shocked and just confused at first, really, just because I had no clue how this particular card could have been charged," he tells CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker in a telephone interview.
Saunders complained to Chase, which reversed the charge. The credit card company admits it's had a number of complaints and has lost money refunding customers who were surprised by the debits.
A Chase spokeswoman says it's now warning customers to remove the Ventra card from their wallets.
Chase says it's not the only credit card company with "contactless" symbols on the back of debit/credit cards.
If you get a surprise charge, Chase says call them and the bank will reverse the charges.
