Lanes Reopen On I-80/94 After Woman Critically Injured In Indiana Crash
GARY, Ind. (STMW) -- All westbound lanes have reopened on Interstate 80/94 after a crash in northwest Indiana left one woman critically injured early Monday.
The woman was driving west near the Cline Avenue exit in Gary, Ind., when her Mountaineer collided with a semi about 2 a.m., Indiana State Police Cpl. Larry Koebcke said.
The SUV spun out of control, hit the inner barrier concrete wall and bounced back into traffic, where it was struck by a semi-truck, Koebcke said.
The woman driving the Mountaineer was ejected from the vehicle and taken with "critical, life-threatening head injuries" to Community Hospital in Munster, Ind., Koebcke said. She was apparently not wearing her seat belt.
Police believe inclement weather may have contributed to the cause of the crash, as road conditions were listed as "snow-covered and slick in spots" when the woman lost control of the SUV. She was the only passenger in the vehicle.
The driver of the semi-truck was not injured and no citations have been issued, Koebcke said.
Traffic was restricted to the shoulder of the expressway for several hours following the crash, but all lanes were reopened about 4:30 a.m., Koebcke said.
Indiana State Police are investigating the crash.
