Suspect Killed In Police-Involved Shooting In Lakemoor
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A suspect is dead and two police officers have been taken to hospitals, after a police-involved shooting in northwest suburban Lakemoor.
Investigators said it began around 5 a.m., when a Lakemoor police officer noticed a suspicious car parked just off the Lakemoor Golf Club near Sullivan Lake Road and Four Seasons Boulevard.
The black SUV was parked on an access road leading to a pump house between the golf course and an apartment complex.
"The officer approached to conduct an investigation, and as we know it, at some point during the investigation this individual produced a firearm," said Lake County major Crimes Task Force spokesman Christopher Covelli.
Investigators said that led to a struggle. Moments later, a backup officer arrived, and learned the suspect had not one, but two guns on him.
"At least one of the two Lakemoor police officers on the scene there did engage and fire at the man," Covelli said.
Covelli said investigators are still looking into whether the suspect fired either of his weapons.
Neighbors said they heard the gunfire.
"I started freaking out, because I have anxiety, and so I thought, is this another ... there couldn't be a gunshot around in Lakemoor. You know, it's a nice place. It's a nice town," Ashley Bethke said.
She moved to the apartment complex two years ago, and said officers patrol the neighborhood often.
"It's so quiet in here. I mean, there's never any noise. There's never been any incidents going on. So it's a big shocker," she said.
Covelli said the suspect was killed in the shooting. The two police officers were taken to the hospital for evaluation.
The SUV had Pennsylvania plates. Covelli said detectives are looking into a lead that the suspect was wanted on a homicide warrant in Pennsylvania.
