Search continues for 2 missing boaters in Lake Michigan near Whiting, Indiana
WHITING, Ind. (CBS) -- The search for two missing boaters who jumped into Lake Michigan near Whiting, Indiana, entered its third day Sunday Morning.
Officials said on Friday, a boat with 12 people on board was sailing in the lake near Whiting. Around 2:30 p.m., one individual jumped off the boat to go swimming.
According to Indiana Conservation Officer Alex Neel, they began to struggle because of the winds and waves on the water at the time.
Those on the boat tried to move closer to him but couldn't because of the conditions. A second person then jumped into the water, but both began to struggle in the water.
A third individual put on a life jacket and jumped into the water.
Police received a 911 call at around 2:40 p.m. Crews found the boat about a mile-and-a-half off the shoreline. Police marine unit officers boarded a small powerboat that had been damaged near the mouth of the Indiana Harbor near the Inland Steel plant.
The U.S. Coast Guard found the person who was wearing the life jacket. He was taken to a local hospital and later released.
The other two men were not located.
Neel said no foul play was suspected, and no citations were issued concerning the incident.
Crews stopped their search because of the conditions on the lake.
As of Sunday morning, the two boaters have not been found. Crews were back out searching for the brothers with several boats out on the water near Wahala Beach.
