Lake Effect Snow Brings Several Inches To Parts Of NW Indiana
(CBS) -- The snow might be long over in Chicago, but parts of northwest Indiana have seen six or more inches of it on Tuesday, and could get a few more, thanks to lake effect snow.
WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports roads in much of northwest Indiana were a mess overnight, as snow plows struggled to keep up with the first significant snowfall of the season.
Lake Effect Snow Dumps Several Inches In NW Indiana
"Well, it's a little early," one man said in LaPorte. But lake effect snow is a fact of life for those living along the southern tip of Lake Michigan.
"So, you just kind of deal with it, and go on with your business, I guess," he added.
Parts of LaPorte and Porter counties in northwest Indiana, and Berrien County in southwest Michigan have been getting the majority of the lake effect snow, which is expected to continue falling until early afternoon.
Porter, Jasper, and Starke counties in northwest Indiana all were under a lake effect snow advisory until 1 p.m. eastern time on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
As of 9:30 a.m. Chicago time, some parts of northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan had seen 7 inches of snow or more, according to the National Weather Service:
- 14.0 inches in Saint Joseph, Mich.
- 13.0 inches in Stevensville, Mich.
- 7.4 inches in LaPorte, Ind.
- 7.0 inches in Kingsford Heights, Ind.
Meantime, in Chicago, waves from Lake Michigan created slick conditions along parts of the lakefront bike and jogging path. Part of the lakefront path was shut down at Oak Street Beach, due to water and black ice on the bike trail, after at least a dozen cyclists fell as they rode along the lakefront.
Paramedics were called to help the injured, but fortunately no one was seriously hurt, nor did anyone end up in the lake. The Chicago Park District shut down the path as a precaution.
