Lake County Sheriff Restores Police Patrols For Winfield
WINFIELD, Ind. (AP) -- The Lake County sheriff has restored patrols to a cash-strapped town after its council agreed to pay for the service.
Sheriff Roy Dominguez restored patrols Tuesday as the Lake County Council approved an agreement to provide police protection at an annual cost of $100,000 to the town of Winfield.
The town incorporated in 1993 but hasn't had its own police force. Dominguez began pressing Winfield for compensation two years ago. He stopped police patrols and refused nonemergency runs Oct. 1 after town officials refused to pay him $100,000 that he demanded.
Dominguez told The Times of Munster that he's happy with a compromise under which the Town Council promised monthly payments of about $8,300 in November and December and quarterly $25,000 payments next year.
