Labor Secretary Calls Clinton 'Most Famous Unknown Person In America'
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The U.S. Secretary of Labor dropped in on Illinois delegates to the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, urging them to work hard so Hillary Clinton can help working people.
Labor Secretary Tom Perez said Illinois knows Park Ridge native Hillary Clinton as well as any state, but he said most voters don't know about some of her work for social justice, fair housing, and on behalf of farm workers and others.
Perez said Democrats need to tell that story during this campaign.
"The work that lies ahead for all of us is to make sure that, by November the 8th, she is no longer the most famous unknown person in America, but that America understands the Hillary Clinton that Illinois has known," he said.
The secretary also said Republicans want voters to forget the story of how far the nation has come since the economic tailspin President Barack Obama inherited when he took office in 2009. Perez said Democrats must tell that story, too.
Congressman Danny Davis also helped fire up the delegates, saying they must work hard to elect Clinton and other Democrats, but he insisted he's calm about the election.
"I ain't really worried about Hillary, and that's because I know we are wise enough to know. I ain't never seen a turkey vote for an early Thanksgiving. Anybody voting for Trump, it would be the same, or at least similar," he said.
