La Russa's Call Gone Wrong
(WSCR) This will go down as one game Cardinals manager Tony La Russa would like to forget in his 33-year career in the big leagues.
Mike Napoli's game-winning double in Game 5 of the World Series on Tuesday night came off of reliever Marc Rzepczynski, but actually, La Russa wanted Jason Motte in the game.
When La Russa made the call to the bullpen to warm up Motte, the noise was so loud at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington that St. Louis bullpen coach Derek Lilliquist warmed up the wrong pitcher.
"That phone in a loud ballpark, it's not an unusual problem," La Russa said. "I mean, it doesn't make it right, but ... Maybe we need to come up with some ear mikes or something."
