La Russa Will Miss Series Opener Against Cubs
ST. LOUIS (CBS) St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa will miss Tuesday's series opener agaisnt the Chicago Cubs while he receives treatment for an eye problem.
The Cardinals and the Cubs will play three games (May 10-12) at Wrigley Field, this the first meeting of the two rivals this season.
The team says the examination will be at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix. The Cardinals did not disclose the problem, but La Russa said in late April that he was dealing with a lingering case of conjunctivitis, an inflammation commonly known as pink eye.
General manager John Mozeliak says La Russa's status for the rest of the week has not been determined. Bench coach Joe Pettini will replace La Russa as acting manager for Tuesday's game.
The 66-year-old La Russa is in his 16th season as St. Louis manager.
