Kindergarteners, Pre-Schoolers Get First Taste Of Election In Vote For Mascot

ALGONQUIN, Ill. (CBS) -- Today was election day for some people who won't get to cast a ballot for president of the United States for more than a decade.

Pre-schoolers and kindergarteners at three Primrose Schools South Elgin, Algonquin and Naperville were voting for a school mascot; their choices included Percy the Rooster, and Billy the Duck.

"Percy and Billy have been positioning themselves for many months," said Laura Daniel, owner of two Primrose Schools in South Elgin and Algonquin.

Students at the three schools had signs that read, "Voting Rocks," and "I Love To Vote."

"It's a fun time of year, so we need to get our youngest students in the voting spirit," Daniel said. "This was a really fun way to bring the election down to their level."

She said Percy represents "courage," and Billy represents "music."

But something was missing from the campaigns that all adults are familiar with. There was no mudslinging; no dirty tricks or lies; no sinister TV commercials.

"We learn about things in a positive way in pre-school, so none of that was allowed," Daniel said.

In the end, Percy the Rooster won the one-year term as school mascot.

"I think it really comes down to who they're most comfortable with, and Percy's everywhere in our schools," Daniel said.
