Killing Of Two Journalists In Virginia A Reminder Of Dangers Of Contentious Firings

(CBS) -- Today's killing of a Virginia reporter and cameraman on live TV allegedly by a former co-worker reminds us of the dangers that go along with contentious firings.

Shootings are rarely as public as what happened in Virginia, but Jeff Cramer, managing director at the security and investigative firm Kroll, says it's a sign of a growing problem.

He suggests the killings show a need for companies to more thoroughly vet applicants before they're hired.

Matt Doherty with the firm Hillard Heintze goes the other direction - calling for more attention after someone is fired, especially for something like violent or inappropriate behavior.

He says bosses should monitor that ex-employee and engage him or her.

In extreme cases, Doherty says companies could tie benefits to promises by the fired employee to avoid certain behaviors.
