Just Plain Ugly
Four fielding errors--two by Tyler Colvin and two by Derrek Lee--cost the Cubs a game Tuesday night at Wrigley field. The errors lead to four unearned runs for the Athletics who took the game 9-5.
For Lee, it's the first time he's made an error since opening day this year (59 straight games without an error) and the first time he's ever made two errors in the same inning. Lee wasn't the only Cub with trouble in the field. Tyler Colvin couldn't come up with a routine single and also committed a throwing error in the seventh.
As for Lee he seemed more than frustrated with the way he and the team played Tuesday night. After the game he said, "Yeah, tonight [was] not a big-league game. We played like a Single-A team. I set the tone. You know, if I make the plays and we get out of the inning it's a whole different ballgame."
Carlos Zambrano deserved better than a loss. He wriggled himself off the hook in the first after loading the bases on two singles and a walk but was able to strike out Jack Cust to end the frame. He settled down and only allowed two runs through six innings on seven hits and three walks but was victimized by Lee's two errors in the fourth. Zambrano is now 1-2 witha 4.70 ERA since coming back into the rotation and reached third-place on the all-time Cubs strikeout list (1,368) by getting Ryan Sweeney in the third inning. Next up would be Kerry Wood with 1,407.
