Judge Denies Bond For Man Charged With Shooting Cop
CHICAGO (STMW) - A judge Saturday denied bond for a Far South Side man charged with attempted murder for shooting a Chicago cop in the thigh during a chase Thursday night.
Judge Adam Bourgeois ordered William T. Wright held without bond, according to a Cook County Criminal Court Clerk. A date for a preliminary hearing was not immediately available.
Wright, 20, of 130th and Ellis has been charged with attempted murder and was also being held on an out-of-state warrant, according to police.
The officer was shot in the thigh about 9:15 p.m., at East 132nd and South Langley, police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien said. The officer was taken in "stable" condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Joe Roccasalva said.
"He is really lucky because it [could] have hit the femoral artery and killed him," Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said.
Police were responding to a call of "shots fired" near 132nd and Langley when officers saw four males and approached them to conduct a field interview, according to police.
One of them fled, and police gave chase. But the suspect pulled a gun and fired, and one of the officers -- a 27-year-old with two years on the force -- was hit in the leg.
The suspect fired six shots and the officer was shot in the right thigh, said Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police.
Police caught up with the shooter and arrested him, recovering a weapon from the scene, according to News Affairs.
The officer is expected to recover.
