Jose Abreu Named Sporting News' AL Rookie Of The Year
(CBS) White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu has been named the American League's Rookie of the Year by the Sporting News. Abreu won in a landslide, garnering 149 votes. Runner-up Matt Shoemaker of the Angels had four votes.
The 27-year-old Abreu batted .317 with 36 homers, 107 RBIs, 35 doubles, a .581 slugging percentage and a .383 on-base percentage in his first year in the big leagues after defecting from Cuba. Abreu led the major leagues in slugging percentage.
Abreu also became the first rookie in MLB history to rank in the top five of either league in each Triple Crown category. He joined Hal Trosky (1934), Ted Williams (1939) and Albert Pujols (2001) as the only rookies in MLB history to hit 30 homers, drive in 100 runs and have 30 doubles in a season.
Abreu's 36 homers were also a White Sox rookie record and are the sixth-most by a rookie in MLB history.
