Jordan's Shoes From 'Flu Game' Being Auctioned Off
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The shoes Michael Jordan wore in the famous "Flu Game" against the Jazz in the 1997 NBA Finals are being auctioned off.
Then a ballboy for Utah, Preston Truman befriended and assisted Jordan during Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals, when Jordan had 38 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists to lead the Bulls to a 90-88 win, despite being visibly weak from flu-like symptoms caused by food poisoning.
WBBM Newsradio's John Cody reports Truman asked Jordan if he could have the sneakers he wore in the game. Jordan autographed the red and black high-tops, and gave them to Truman.
Fifteen years later, Truman decided it's time to auction them off. He said he'll miss them, but he's keeping the important things from that night.
"I think the most important thing to me through all this has just been more about the relationship, and the photos I have, and the memories, more than the shoes," he said. "I haven't really felt safe or comfortable having the shoes in my house, just because I know their value."
Grey Flannel auctions has set the opening bid at $5,00 for the flu sneakers. Bidding has been set to begin on Monday. If you want to bid, visit their website here.
Truman said shoes of lesser significance have gone for $20,000, so he expects to get more.
