Johnson: Rose Returning This Week 'Would Be A Big Surprise'

(WSCR) Derrick Rose has now missed 10 straight games with a groin injury, and a timely return seems unlikely.

"He is running," K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune told The Mully and Hanley Show. "He's not running well or a lot, but he is running. He's lifting weights consistently. He's in the pool consistently running and he's doing some on-the-court running with the strength and conditioning coach. He's not doing any contact. He's just doing some individual shooting. He's not doing any scrimmaging or 3-on-3 or things like that. Until you get through that, you're not going to be playing. That's why, this week, I think would be a big surprise. I think it's going to be into next week before you see Derrick."

Without Rose, the Bulls lost to the Thunder in what could be a preview of the NBA Finals by 14 points Sunday.

The Bulls have 12 remaining regular season games left before the playoff starts, but Johnson thinks Rose is going to need to get some regular season action to get in playoff shape.

"The thing about Derrick is, I know he's incredibly unique and special, but even he needs to get some games under his belt before those playoffs start," Johnson said. "You're down to 12 games. It doesn't sound like (he'll play) this week. I suppose there's an outside chance he'll play in Boston (on Thursday), but I'd be surprised. It doesn't sound like this week it's going to happen."
