Funeral services Thursday for former DePaul basketball coach Joey Meyer
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The DePaul community and basketball fans will gather to say goodbye to former coach Joey Meyer.
His funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Saint Vincent DePaul Church, 1010 W. Webster Ave.
Meyer was head coach from 1984 to 1997, succeeding his father, Ray Meyer.
He took the Blue Demons to seven NCAA tournaments, including back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in 1986 and 1987.
Joey Meyer died last Friday in Hinsdale surrounded by family, according to DePaul. He was 74.
Played for the Blue Demons for three seasons
Joey Meyer played for his father for three seasons from 1968 to 1971, averaging 16.4 points in 75 games for DePaul. The Buffalo Braves selected the guard in the 18th round of the 1971 NBA Draft but never appeared in a game in the league.
Meyer served as an assistant for his father for 11 seasons before taking over when Ray retired after coaching DePaul from 1942 to 1984.
Meyer went 231-158 in his 13 seasons as DePaul's head coach. Some of Meyer's top players included Rod Strickland, David Booth, and Tom Kleinschmidt.
Following his time at DePaul, the Chicago native coached in the NBA's developmental league and worked as a regional scout for the Los Angeles Clippers.
