Jewel-Osco Parent Company To Cut 800 Jobs
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The parent company of Jewel-Osco today announced plans to cut its workforce by 800, including about 20 jobs in the Chicago area.
SUPERVALU said most of the cuts will take place this month, including approximately 20 positions at Jewel-Osco's office headquarters in Itasca.
The reductions include both current positions and open jobs that will not be filled, the company said.
The company said in a statement that the reductions are part of its plan to reduce permanent expenses and cut operating costs. The cuts will allow the company to provide more competitive prices to consumers, the company said.
The reductions will be across most departments within the company, but generally will not affect store-level associates.
The company also said it will focus on investing capital into the growth of Save-A-Lot, its discount grocery store chain, as well as continuing to expand its wholesale distribution business to more than 2,000 independent retailers nationwide.
