Jewel Opens New 'Green' Store In Lakeview
CHICAGO (CBS) - Jewel-Osco is set to open an environmentally-friendly grocery store in the Lakeview neighborhood Wednesday.
The new store is located at 3630 N. Southport Ave., on the site of an old Jewel store that was demolished last year.
The two-level, 62,000 square-foot store is LEED-certified for its "green" features. It also features organic and eco-friendly products alongside the more traditional ones.
The building also includes a full-service pharmacy, and an expanded kosher section featuring a separate deli and Israeli wines, the Roscoe View Journal reported.
The store is laid out with a "Neighborhood Market" concept. It also features custom décor that includes photos of the neighborhood and a mockup of Wrigley Field, which is located about three blocks to the east, the Roscoe View Journal reported.
Unlike the new store, the old grocery market was only a Jewel rather than a Jewel-Osco, and offered only groceries. A separate, freestanding Osco Drug store was located across the street.
The Osco Drug store is still in existence as a CVS store. When Supervalu purchased Jewel parent company Albertson's, all freestanding Osco stores were converted to CVS stores.
The new Jewel store is the second "green" grocery store to open in the past few weeks on the city's North Side. On Sept. 30, Dominick's opened a new LEED-certified store at 5233 N. Lincoln Ave., also on the site of an old store.
