Jet Accident At LaGuardia Impacts Travel Elsewhere, Including Chicago
(CBS) – Many people trying to get from Chicago to New York were stuck here Thursday after a plane trying to land in driving snow at LaGuardia Airport slid off the runway, forcing that airport to close.
The Delta Airlines plane ended up with its nose smashed through a fence and dangling over the water. Pictures suggest it could have been much worse; a couple dozen people suffered minor injuries.
The plane leaked fuel for a short time before crews could stop it.
Initial word was LaGuardia would be closed until five p.m. Thursday, but it re-opened earlier.
The hours-long shutdown made a mess of travel, so airlines were allowing passengers to change their plans without a fee.
