Jensen: Even With Orton, Hanie's The Guy

(WSCR) Since the Broncos released Kyle Orton, reports have surfaced that the former Bears quarterback has a desire to return to Chicago.

With the Bears placing Jay Cutler on the shelf for a least a few weeks with a fractured right thumb, the move would seemingly make sense, as Orton has strong ties to the Bears.

One Bears expert, however, said even if the Bears put a waiver claim on Orton, Caleb Hanie will still be the No. 1 quarterback until Cutler returns.

"The Bears are committed to Caleb Hanie," Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times told The Boers and Bernstein Show. "There's not anybody out there that they are going to trot in here, whether it's Brett Favre or Marc Bulger or anybody, that's going to move ahead of Caleb Hanie on the depth chart. They tried that last year with Todd Collins and that was a colossal failure."

The Bears are 30th in the order of waiver claims, and several teams before them will likely have interest in Orton. It's possible, though, that Orton could slip past all 32 teams, given the roughly $2.5 million remaining on his contract.

"There is some appeal there," Jensen said. "There are a lot of teams struggling at the quarterback position. Say whatever you want about Kyle Orton, but he's 29 years old, he's won a lot of football games. You saw the Chiefs game last night, this Tyler Palko kid looked terrible. What if the Chiefs take a look at him? ... I think there are too many teams that would be interested in him ahead of the Bears."
