Jenks Throws Smoke, Earns Save
Bobby Jenks had his chance at revenge against the Mariners Wednesday night and he took it--with 99 mile-per-hour smoke. Jenks struck out the side en route to recording his 21st save of the year. Of the 13 pitches Jenks threw, 11 were fastballs. Nine of those were strikes. Plain and simple: Jenks was dealing. When asked about being bounced into and out of the closer role twice this season Jenks said, "I don't know because I try not to get involved too much in what goes on behind the doors but all I know is I have to continuously, you know, keep proving myself and let my pitching do the talking."
Not so good for the Sox Wednesday was Mark Buehrle. After two stellar outings, it finally caught up with the Sox ace. Buehrle lasted just five innings--something he says he never likes to do--and gave up five earned on nine hits. It was the first time in six starts that Buehrle had allowed more than three runs since June 6th against the Indians.
On the trade front there was little action Wednesday. Most players are sticking to the opinion that the Sox don't need to add anyone, but that if Kenny Williams made a move, they'd be happy to have the help. What is likely the sticking point is that Daniel Hudson is scheduled to pitch Friday--the day before the deadline. If scouts like what they see then perhaps Williams has a better chip to trade. On the other hand if Williams likes what he sees, he may just keep the kid. Either way, I'm not sure Sox fans should look for a major move any earlier than Friday night.
