Jeni's Ice Cream Shops Close, Products Recalled, Amid Bacteria Scare
(CBS) – The Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams chain has temporarily closed its two Chicago locations because of a possible listeria contamination and has issued a voluntary recall of its products.
The company says listeria was found in a sample taken by the Nebrasksa Department of Agriculture.
The two Jeni's branches in Chicago are in Wicker Park and along the Southport commercial corridor.
The company says all of its shops will remain closed until its products are deemed safe. The voluntary recall covers "all ice creams, frozen yogurts, sorbets, and ice cream sandwiches for all flavors," the Ohio-based company said. Production of ice cream has also stopped, for now.
Whole Foods and Roundy's are among the grocery chains that are removing Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams products from shelves.
Listeria monocytogenes can lead to infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.
Federal officials say they don't think there is a connection with a recent recall of Blue Bell Ice Cream.
