Jealous Husband Charged With Home Invasion
UPDATED 05/25/11 9:09 p.m.
SKOKIE, Ill. (STMW) -- A Glencoe doctor has been charged with home invasion with a firearm after police said he broke into a Skokie residence last week and battered a man who had a relationship his wife, police said.
Skokie police said just after 9 p.m. May 17, Sergei Shushunov, 59, of 469 Madison Ave. in Glencoe, entered the a Skokie man's residence in the 9200 block of Central Park Avenue. The Skokie resident was in his bedroom on a cell phone talking to Shushunov's wife when Shushonov entered the room carrying a handgun, police said. The front door had been left unlocked, they said.
According to police, the man gave his name as "Sergei" and ordered the Skokie man to "leave my wife alone." He pointed the gun at the victim's abdomen and repeatedly punched him in the face, police said.
Police said Shushunov also took the man's iPhone before leaving the home in an unidentified direction.
The left side of the Skokie man's face appeared swollen, according to police.
When they determined Shushunov's address, police said, they requested assistance from Glencoe police, and they arrested Shushonov before 10 p.m. that same night outside his home.
Police said Shushunov's wife was in the process of divorcing him. While the man said he had been "courting" Shushunov's wife, the wife said she had ended the relationship, but they still remained friends and regularly talked on the phone.
Glencoe police said they removed Shushunov's considerable cache of firearms from his home the day after his arrest at the request of his wife. Glencoe Police Chief Michael Volling said they took away rifles, shotguns and handguns.
"He has some kind of sporting goods business, and he likes to go hunting in Russia," Volling said.
Shushunov is a licensed physician in Illinois, according to the state Department of Professional Regulation, which lists no disciplinary actions against him.
He operates Lev Laboratories, Ltd., also known as 4HealthyKids, out of his home and a Glencoe U.S. Post Office Box. The firm sells herbal remedies directed at children -- treating colic, attention deficit hyperactive disorder and other relatively minor childhood conditions. The site identifies Shushunov as having been trained in pediatric critical care.
Shushunov is a principal in Russian Hunting LLC, a big-game hunting trip brokerage, operating out of the same post office box and an address in St. Petersburg, Russia, according to its website.
An operator at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center Wednesday said Shushunov was on staff at the Chicago hospital as a pediatric critical care physician.
The marital status on Shushunov's Facebook page changed from "married" to "it's complicated" May 17.
Shushunov is scheduled to appear in court June 27.
