Jail Inmate Charged With July Murder

CHICAGO (STMW) - A Cook County Jail inmate has been charged with the murder of a man who was struck multiple times by gunfire in a drive-by shooting just blocks from his South Side home in July.

Kenyada Clair, 18, of the 7700 block of South Peoria Street, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the July 16 shooting in the 5200 block of South King Drive, police said. Clair was already in custody at the Cook County Jail on an unrelated offense when he was charged.

The victim -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as Lorenzo Beasley -- was initially taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, in critical condition, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis said. Beasley died at 10:30 p.m., the night of the shooting according to the medical examiner's office.

Police said the shooting happened about 7:10 p.m.. Beasley was in a vehicle when another vehicle pulled up and an occupant inside opened fire, striking him multiple times, police said.

Clair will appear for a bond hearing on Thursday.
