Jackson Rocked Early, Padres Rout Cubs 11-1
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Edwin Jackson got roughed up early and couldn't recover.
In his shortest stint of the season, Jackson allowed eight runs on nine hits with two walks and two home runs as the Chicago Cubs were routed by the San Diego Padres 11-1 on Friday night.
"It was a terrible job of making adjustments all around," Jackson said. "When you don't make adjustments quick enough, that's what happens."
It was a performance by Jackson (3-4) that rekindled memories from last year, his first with the Cubs. In his first nine starts of 2013, Jackson was 1-6 with a 5.76 ERA. In his first nine starts this season, he was 3-3 with a 3.98 ERA.
"He'd been throwing well," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. "No one would have expected that he would have that outing."
Although against the Padres, Jackson always struggles. He's now 0-5 with a 6.94 ERA in 11 games, nine being starts.
"I don't really know the numbers," Jackson said. "I don't really know, in the past, what I have done or I haven't done. All I now is if you don't execute pitches, it really doesn't matter what team it is, they can hit the ball hard."
The Padres, in snapping a four-game losing streak, set a season high in runs and had 12 hits. Everyone but Will Venable had at least one hit among the starting position players.
Yonder Alonso and Yasmani Grandal homered, and Chase Headley drove in three runs.
Tim Stauffer (2-0) was the beneficiary. Making his first start since May 14, 2012, at Washington, Stauffer pitched five shutout innings and gave up two hits. He struck out five, with a walk and a hit batter, and earned his first win as a starter since Sept. 16, 2011, against Arizona.
"And two years from now it should feel pretty good again," Stauffer joked about his time between starts. "It felt good and after getting through that first inning, the offense really set the tone. After that I was just trying to keep pitches down and eat up some innings and keep the bullpen fresh."
The Cubs managed one runner in scoring position through six innings before Wellington Castillo drove in Luis Valbuena with a broken-bat single in the seventh. Three relievers completed the five-hitter for San Diego.
"We had him on the ropes early and he was getting into a high-pitch count in the first," Renteria said. "If we can keep the inning alive, maybe it changes the complexion of the game a little bit."
The Padres scored four first-inning runs, matching their total from the previous three games.
NOTES: The Padres juggled their rotation with LHP Robbie Erlin joining RHP Andrew Cashner (elbow) on the DL this week with elbow soreness. Donn Roach was bumped from Saturday's start, with Billy Buckner expected to fill in after being promoted from Triple-A El Paso. That made Roach available for relief on Friday; he worked a scoreless inning. Buckner, who was signed April 19, was 3-2 with a 2.98 in five starts at El Paso. ... OF Carlos Quentin, who last played on Sunday when straining his groin, is available for pinch-hitting duties. ... Cubs OF Justin Ruggiano played in his second straight game at Triple-A Iowa; he has been on the DL since April 24 with a strained hamstring.
